Theory
The ink in this cartridge is retained because the cartridge has an internal sponge.

Step 1) Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.

Step 2) We must remove the top.  Lay the cartridge on a solid surface and put the edge of a sharp knife at the intersection of the black and colored plastic. Work the knife around the top to loosen it. Then pull off the top. You can do this carefully and not damage the plastic much.

Step 3) Keeping the cartridge on paper towels, take a syringe and fill it with about 3-5 ml -- for filling each chamber.

Step 4) Insert the needle fully into the appropriate hole. Inject the ink very S-L-O-W-L-Y and watch until the sponge is saturated. (Some colors will not be empty, so don't expect the sponge to absorb the entire amount.

Step 5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other two colors with different syringes.

Step 6) Put the top back on and tape down in place.

Step 7) Set above a paper towel for an hour as a drip precaution. Expect a few drips. The paper towel must not touch the cartridge during this step, since the towel will draw the ink out of the cartridge.

Step 8) For best results, let sit overnight before using.

To Clean the Printhead

Only clean the print head if you get poor print quality or no print. Be sure that you don't have an air bubble problem. If cleaning the print head causes the situation to get worse rather than improve, you probably have an air bubble problem. If you have an air bubble problem, you need to re-inject some ink very deep into the cartridge. Follow the directions in the printer manual to run the cleaning routine. If this doesn't work, take the cartridge to the nearest hot water faucet. Turn on the hot water. Let it get hot. Put only the print head portion (where the ink comes out) under the hot water for 2 to 3 seconds Dry off the cartridge using a soft tissue. Re-insert the cartridge into the printer. Run the normal cleaning routine a few times. If this doesn't work, soak only the print head in simmering water for up to 2 hours. You may add up to 50 percent ammonia for really tough clogs.

If you have no printouts, or bad printouts, such as skips, or faded spots try the steps below to correct the problem.

This is the best way to deal with a clogged print head. Take the cartridge out of the printer and take some toilet paper, or paper towel, and wad it up over the print head of your ink cartridge (that's the thing on the bottom of the cartridge where the ink comes out). While standing, hold the cartridge in your hand, with the print head toward the floor and swing it hard, sort of like a softball pitcher winding up for the pitch. On the down swing really put some force into it. The force of gravity on the ink will force it through the clogged jet and clean it out. Swing two or three good swings and look at your tissue paper. When you see all three colors coming out about the same you have gotten it unclogged. Put it back in the printer and you're ready to go.

The only other thing that can cause this is a burnt-out resistor in the print head. This can happen if you try to keep printing with a dry cartridge. The ink is the cooling agent for the resistors and when it is gone they overheat pretty quickly. If this is the case there is nothing to do but buy a new cartridge.

To Clean Your Sink

The ink is water-soluble. Use plenty of soap and warm water. You may also need to use Comet or a similar cleaner if the stains persist.

To Clean Your Hands

On hands, use water and bleach.
